Session Description

The Multigenerational Workforce: How to Recruit/Retain the BEST and Motivate/Manage the REST!

This dynamic presentation described the four generations currently in the nursing workforce, explain the influence of formative factors on workplace values, identify potential sources of inter-generational conflict, and discuss strategies to leverage generational attributes relative to key managerial functions.

What is Keeping Nurse Managers Up at Night?
This interactive workshop focused on three key challenges confronting the nursing profession: (1) Motivating and recruiting young nurses into leadership positions. (2) Reframing negativity and increasing morale. (3) Encouraging innovation in a "do more with less" hospital culture. Attendees are invited to share their success stories with their nurse executive colleagues.

We are honored to introduce our featured speaker:

SWPONL Fall 2015 Educational and Networking Session:

Leading High Performing Teams Begins with YOU
Speaker:
Valerie Howard
, Ed D, MSN, RN
Dean and Professor of Nursing
School of Nursing and Health Sciences
Robert Morris University
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

The Southwestern Pennsylvania Organization of Nurse Leaders sponsored an Educational and Networking Session on Tuesday, November 10, 2015 at the beautiful South Hills Country Club on Brownsville Road in Pittsburgh.

Valerie Howard, Ed D, MSN, RN, Dean and Professor of the Nursing School at Robert Morris University presented an engaging and interactive session titled “Leading High Performing Teams Begins With You”.

Valerie presented numerous reference and resource tools for exploring and understanding ourselves better and fully recognizing our leadership approach.  She engaged the group in an exercise using the C. Clinton Sidle book “The Leadership Wheel”.  The Leadership Wheel is a tool with four main personality categories: Warrior/North, Nurturer/South, Critical Thinker/West and Visionary/East.

The SWPONL event participants completed a series of questions and their final score placed them in one of the four categories on the Leadership Wheel.  Valerie tied the exercise together with a live illustration of how a team can leverage the strengths of all members and minimize the weaknesses which will create a strong, well-functioning team.

Some attendees were asking questions about the Leadership Wheel and Dr. Howard shared this information: There is an updated website that was implemented in September 2015, which can be accessed at http://www.theleadershipwheel.com/ . Since there is a copyright, there is information about the instrument and instructions for payment.  (The payment supports the Native American Community.)If anyone wants to use the materials, they would need to contact the organization.

Valerie inspired the participants to continue the lifelong journey of leadership development and to return to their organizations and share the same message with their teams.

The SWPONL event attendees enjoyed the opportunity to network while earning continuing education credit and learning to sharpen their coaching and mentoring skills with new ways to energize, motivate and develop their team!

We are delighted to announce that at the end of the event Dr. Howard joined PONL as a member and we look forward to seeing her at future events!
